Imagine yourself reviewing a proposal given to you by a potential employee. Now imagine yourself reviewing it and checking out some of the information presented to you in the proposal. While reviewing the information, you find yourself realizing there are a few errors. Some incorrect information, as well as some formatting and grammatical errors, have been presented in the document. Not only has this individual just blown their chance at getting any future projects from their company, but they have also broken a major rule in writing. They have lost absolutely all credibility they had up to that point been given. Without credibility, the feelings and thoughts that you as a writer are expressing on paper mean absolutely nothing to the reader.
Credibility, as defined in the dictionary, is the quality or power of inspiring belief. If someone reading your proposal finds errors of any kind, whether they are embellishments in statistic, spelling or punctuation errors, or formatting issues, they are less likely to continue reading your document without prejudice. That is why it is so very important for credibility to be established in writing. This gives the reader a true sense of how reliable you are. It also gives them an idea of exactly how much trust you arouse in others. By putting yourself in the shoes of the reader, you could easily see why these errors have caused a great deal of concern. They (the reader) do not know you (the writer) anymore than they know the man cooking their lunch at the café down on the corner.
All of this could have been avoided for this employee if they had just followed a few simple rules. Credibility can be established with the reader by first of all being honest. Letting someone know upfront that you are an individual of great integrity goes a long way, especially when applying for a job. It is also important that you make your audience aware of your specific skill sets that may be of most importance to them as a company. Also, make sure to let them know that you are the person that they can count on to not only get the job done, but to get it done right. Make sure to be objective in your writings. By doing this, you are letting the reader know that you look at multiple sides of issues before forming a decision. Finally and perhaps most important of all is to write with confidence. It is an exact science to remain confident without sounding arrogant or boastful. However, once it is done, you have given the reader the idea that you not only believe in yourself, but also in your proposal.
The situation above could have turned out so much better for this employee if they had just taken a bit more time and caution in the writing of their proposal. Credibility is the key to writing of each and every kind. Without it, the words that you are writing might as well be written in invisible ink.
